Wedding Vendor Red Flags: When to Walk Away
Not every wedding vendor deserves your business. Here are the warning signs that should make you think twice before signing a contract.
They Won't Show You Full Work Samples
Every vendor highlights their best work. But if they can't or won't show you a complete wedding gallery, a full catering menu in action, or let you attend an event they're working, that's a red flag. You need to see their average work, not just their greatest hits.
The Contract Is Vague
A professional vendor should provide a detailed contract that covers services, deliverables, timeline, payment schedule, cancellation policy, and what happens in emergencies. If the contract is a single page with no specifics, or they resist putting details in writing, walk away.
They're Unresponsive
If a vendor takes a week to respond to emails before you've even hired them — when they're trying to win your business — imagine how they'll be after they have your deposit. Consistent communication is non-negotiable.
They Pressure You to Book Immediately
"This price is only good today" or "I have another couple looking at your date" are high-pressure sales tactics. Legitimate vendors give you time to decide. Your date might genuinely be popular, but a professional will give you at least a few days to think.
They Badmouth Other Vendors
The wedding industry is a community. Vendors who trash-talk their competitors are unprofessional and likely difficult to work with. Look for vendors who speak respectfully about others in the industry, even if they're direct competitors.
Your Gut Says No
Trust your instincts. You'll be working closely with your vendors on one of the most important days of your life. If something feels off — their attitude, their reliability, their attention to detail — listen to that feeling. There are plenty of talented, professional vendors who will make you feel confident and excited.
