Wedding Thank You Card Wording: Templates for Every Gift

Thank you cards are non-negotiable. Here are templates that sound heartfelt (not generic) for every type of gift and gesture.

The Formula

Every thank you note follows the same structure: (1) Thank them specifically, (2) mention the gift or what it means to you, (3) reference your relationship or a moment from the wedding, (4) close warmly. Keep it to 3-5 sentences. Handwritten always.

For a Specific Gift

Dear Aunt Carol, Thank you so much for the gorgeous Le Creuset Dutch oven — it's already sitting proudly on our counter! We can't wait to make our first batch of Sunday soup in it and think of you. It was wonderful having you at the wedding, and your toast had us both in tears. With so much love, Emily & Mike

For Cash or a Check

Dear Tom and Lisa, Thank you for your incredibly generous gift. We're putting it toward our honeymoon to Italy, and we'll think of you when we're eating pasta in Rome! Your presence at our wedding meant the world to us. Love, Emily & Mike

Pro tip: Never mention the specific dollar amount of a cash gift.

For Someone Who Couldn't Attend

Dear Grandma Rose, We missed you at the wedding, but completely understand. Your beautiful card and thoughtful gift meant so much to us. We'll be sure to visit soon and show you all the photos. We love you so much. Emily & Mike

Timeline

Send thank you cards within 3 months of the wedding. Ideally within 1 month. The longer you wait, the more awkward it gets. Write a few each night — 5 cards a day and you'll be done in 2-3 weeks.
