How to Pick Your First Dance Song

Your first dance sets the mood for the entire reception. Here's how to choose a song that's meaningful without being cliche.

Start With Your Story

The best first dance songs aren't necessarily the "best wedding songs." They're songs that mean something to you as a couple. The song that was playing on your first date. The one you both sing in the car. The artist you saw at your first concert together. Personal always beats popular.

Consider the Vibe

Do you want a slow, romantic sway? An upbeat, fun dance? A choreographed number? The song sets expectations. A slow ballad means a quiet, intimate moment. An upbeat song means energy and fun. Neither is wrong — just choose intentionally.

Think About Length

Most first dances should be 2-3 minutes. Anything longer and guests start checking their phones. If your song is 5 minutes, talk to your DJ about fading it out or creating an edit. Or better yet, invite guests onto the floor halfway through.

Avoid the Overplayed

"At Last" by Etta James. "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran. "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri. These are beautiful songs, but your guests have seen 47 first dances to them. If you love one of these, go for it — but consider a less obvious deep cut from the same artist.

Don't Overthink It

If you and your partner can't agree, or nothing feels perfect, just pick a song you both like and move on. The first dance is 3 minutes of your entire wedding. The song matters less than the moment of holding each other in front of everyone you love.

Practice (A Little)

You don't need choreography lessons. But dance together in your living room to the song a few times so you're not stiff and awkward. Know where to put your hands, which direction to move, and when the song ends.
